LTI 1.3 - Introduction

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) revolutionized the way educators and students access digital learning resources, apps, and tools within any learning management system (LMS) by enabling a one-click, seamless connection.

It is the only industry educational technology standard that securely connects LMSes with external learning tools, confirms the tool's credentials, and exchanges information in the teaching and learning workflow.

MagicBox now integrates with LTI 1.3 version, also known as LTI Advantage, to provide better usability and data security. It is a package of services that adds new features to enhance the integration of any tool with any LMS. LTI Advantage includes advanced protections for exchanging sensitive student data found in the core LTI 1.3.

MagicBox's implementation of LTI 1.3 builds new LTI services and allows the publisher to perform the following activities:

  • LTI platform and tool configuration set up.
  • The LTI launch to a third-party tool (Pretzl, Moodle, etc.).
  • LTI Advantage Names and Roles Service is used by the third-party tool to get roster data. It allows the tool to retrieve user information from the course using IMS LTI Names and Roles Service.
  • LTI Advantage Grade Pass Service populates grades in an already existing gradebook column, updates the gradebook column, and manages the grade. This service will return the score from MagicBox to the third-party tool.
